From well-known bands to up-and-coming artists, Berkeley has a wide variety of musical talent

With so much to offer, it’s no surprise that Berkeley is loved by both locals and visitors alike. This Northern California town is known for its rich history, scientific endeavors, and the arts. Overflowing with creativity, Berkeley has been the starting point for an abundance of musicians.

Whether you are driving up the coast with your windows down or taking a jog around the neighborhood, here are a few local Berkeley musicians to give a listen.

1. Green Day

Everyone who likes American rock music is undoubtedly familiar with Green Day, but few people realize this classic band originated in Berkeley, California. Green Day was formed in the late 1980s and gained popularity playing at various venues throughout Berkely, including 924 Gilman and Berkeley Square. The five-man band has released a total of 13 albums, and some of their most well-known songs include “Basket Case,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” and “21 Guns.” If you’re wanting to step back in time and enjoy some classic ‘80s rock, Green Day still stands the test of time.

2. The Librarians

The Librarians was formed in the late 1990s by Damon Larson and Ryan Gan. This pop/rock band, whose roots can be traced back to Berkeley, released one album in 2002 titled The Pathetic Aesthetic. Although the band dissolved shortly after releasing their first album, you can still enjoy the catchy music from their album.

3. Bird by Bird

Bird by Bird, a two-man band from Berkeley, can best be described as having an indie-rock-pop vibe. The band is composed of two talented members: Jonathan Devato, guitarist and singer, and Ross Traver, drummer and singer. Since releasing their first album, While You Sleep, in 2011, the duo quickly gained popularity in Berkeley. They have also toured the United States twice and played at various festivals and a plethora of clubs across the nation. Their songs are groovy, inspiring, and thoughtfully composed. If you’re in the mood to check out this new and hip band, give their album a listen.
