Challenging times can threaten to pull a community apart, but these Oakland restaurants aren’t letting that happen

COVID-19 has hit the restaurant industry especially hard. Although most restaurants were forced to close their doors in March due to the shelter-in-place order, this setback isn’t stopping Oakland restaurants from exhibiting generosity. If you’re interested in supporting local businesses, here are four Oakland restaurants that are showing up for their town.

1. Luka’s Taproom & Lounge

Located in Uptown, Luka’s Taproom & Lounge has been serving authentic and delicious California cuisine since opening its doors in 2004. Although the pandemic forced them to close temporarily, they have found a way to adjust and be there for their community. In response to COVID-19, Luka’s recently launched Community Kitchens. Community Kitchens consists of a wide range of restaurants across the city that have banded together to prepare meals for homeless individuals and other vulnerable populations affected by the pandemic.

2. The Cooper Spoon

The Cooper Spoon, famous for its creative and tasty cocktails, has a reputation for having a warm and welcoming environment. Since the start of COVID, this Oakland staple has joined Luka’s and is participating in Community Kitchens.

3. Alamar Kitchen & Bar

Nestled in the heart of Uptown Oakland, Alamar Kitchen & Bar is a well-loved seafood restaurant that is especially popular for their memorable braised oxtail and delicious peel n’ eat shrimp boil. They are best known for their creative and flavorful menu. Despite the hardships this restaurant has experienced, Alamar Kitchen and Bar is committed to spreading kindness. They have recently begun giving free to-go meals to restaurant workers who are unemployed.

4. Nick’s Pizza

Nick’s Pizza, a hole-in-the-wall nook, is respected for its commitment to using high-quality, locally sourced ingredients and their creative menu, such as the Oakland-Style Pizza. Nick’s is encouraging donations for their worker relief fund by offering sourdough starters delivered to your doorstep. If you’re craving the perfect pizza to go along with your Friday night movie, you won’t be disappointed if you order from Nick’s.
